Most people consider Memorial Day Weekend the beginning of summer with BBQ’s and their picnics but not me. I consider the first Mystery Cruise of the season the first day of summer when we get 100+ people out on Boston Harbor, solving a mystery, enjoying dinner and the fantastic views of Boston from the top deck of the Ft. Independance.
It wasn’t always that way as our cruises used to start in mid-May when our optimism was sunnier than the weather outside. Summer cruises on Boston Harbor are always the highlight of our summer and the secret that most people don’t know is that cruising in September is actually best of all as the water is still warm making the nights a real joy.
This summer we have some special cruises planned including one on Saturday, July 4th that we hope will have fireworks in the background and Saturday, July 11th where we will pass the world class tall ships that will be in Boston Harbor.
The biggest news of all is what we are doing after our mystery cruise. We are introducing the Boston Ghost Cruise. This 90 minute cruise sails Saturday nights at 10:30PM and tell the Best Ghost stories in Boston set right where most of them took place, on Boston Harbor.
So there you have it, Summer starts on June 13th.
Last night we exhibited at a tabletop expo at the Greater Boston Convention & Visitors bureau. It was the first time we have done anything like that to promote Mystery Café in years. To be honest, I have been doing Mystery Café now for 22 years and I had not been focusing on it because for me, it wasn’t new and exciting but wow, was I surprised.
Most of the people that came over to the table were excited about it. “Wow, what a great idea!” “Is it new?” “Perfect, I’m going to do it this weekend” “You do this on a Boston Harbor Cruise?” I was amazed and inspired. What was old to me was new to 90% of the people in that room and those people were the movers and shakers in the tourist industry and they didn’t know about something that I have been doing most of my professional life, the industry that I started.
Everyone we talked to was excited about it as if they found Boston’s Best Kept Secret. That is something I can get excited about it. People have loved Mystery Café and the dozens of shows that we have done for tens thousands of people over 22 years. I think what I saw last night was an inspiration to me and to those that work for Mystery Café. It is new to many people and our job is to continue to entertain and do what we do best and you, the reader and the guest will talk about it, share with your friends and tell more people about it. Sure, the All New, Mystery Café!
My name is David Goldstein and I started the first murder mystery dinner theater in Cambridge, MA over 22 years ago. At the time there were murder mystery cocktail parties and murder mystery weekends and some corporate murder mysteries but the first scheduled weekly mystery dinner theater was the Mystery Cafe.
It’s a great story as to how I started it and as this blog goes along I will share various stories of the trials and tribulations of running a dinner theater, expanding it to 22 cities around the country and my favorite event, performing for Hef and the Girls Next Store at the Playboy Mansion (twice).
Just yesterday I was discussing our secret to long term success as compared to one of my inspirations, Shear Madness. We have taken the interactive mystery and we do it as a dinner theater, a dinner cruise, a mansion murder mystery and we change shows and situations so our repeat clients can experience a different theme or a twist in how we get you involved.
